amend 4.2.4 – What’s new

A brand-new call screen with slide to answer, picture-in-picture video calls, amend's own soothing sounds, safety check-ins that survive a restart, and important security and privacy improvements.

Version: 4.2.4 · Released: 7 November 2026 · Available on: Google Play (closed testing)

This update makes calling on amend feel calm and personal, gives the app its own voice with sounds made just for amend, and strengthens security and privacy ahead of an independent security audit. We recommend everyone updates.

New

  • 📞 A brand-new call screen – Calls now open on a soft, slowly shifting background with ripples around your friend’s avatar while it rings. To pick up, slide the green button across (or tap it), so a call isn’t answered by accident in your pocket. During a call, mute, speaker, camera and end sit in a frosted bar with clear labels, a live timer shows how long you’ve talked, and a small lock reminds you the call is end-to-end encrypted. The screen adapts to small phones, large phones and landscape, and right-to-left languages slide the other way. In efficiency mode every animation stays still to save battery.
  • 💬 Quick replies – Can’t talk right now? Tap Can’t talk — text me, Call you in 5 min or On my way on the incoming call screen. amend declines the call and sends that message for you, in your own language. Message declines the call and opens your chat.
  • 🪟 Picture-in-picture – During a video call, go to your home screen and the call shrinks into a small floating window with your friend’s video, so you can check a map or a message without hanging up. Tap it to come back full screen.
  • 🎵 amend’s own sounds – amend now has its own gentle sounds: Dewdrop, Leaf, Bamboo and Petal for messages; Morning forest, Riverbank and Wind chimes for calls; Sprout, Sunbeam and Glow for your forest and walking goals. Choose yours in Settings → Sounds: tap a sound to hear it, and it’s used straight away. You can also keep your phone’s own sound or turn sounds off. Every sound was created from scratch for amend, with no samples from anywhere else.

Improved

  • Safety check-ins survive a restart – If you start a check-in (“check in within 1 hour”) and your phone restarts or the battery dies, amend now sets it up again as soon as the phone is back on. If the time ran out while it was off, your SOS starts right away, as it should.
  • Scheduled messages are sent exactly once, even when amend is open and also sending in the background.
  • Ready for newer Android phones – amend’s built-in components now support phones that use 16 KB memory pages, which Google Play will require from 2027.
  • Cleaner, smaller code: we removed parts of the app that were no longer used.

Privacy and security

Before amend’s independent security audit, we reviewed the whole app ourselves and fixed everything we found. In plain words, this update means:

  • Other apps on your phone can’t control amend. Calls are only answered and chats only opened by you or by amend’s own notifications.
  • Strange messages and pictures can’t crash amend. amend now safely ignores messages and images that are built to cause trouble, instead of closing.
  • Strangers don’t learn your internet address. Profile photos hosted elsewhere are only loaded for people you’ve accepted. With Tor turned on, map tiles now go through Tor too, and translation models are never downloaded outside it.
  • Your backup key stays yours. The screen that shows your backup key and the “link another phone” code can’t be screenshotted or screen-recorded, and a copied key is hidden from clipboard previews and cleared after a minute.
  • Your identity is never lost by accident. If your phone’s secure storage has a temporary problem, amend keeps your existing key safe instead of replacing it. Removing your identity, or starting a burner identity, now also clears everything that could link the old identity to the new one.
  • Moderation can’t erase your history. If an account is blocked by amend’s moderation, its chat is hidden, not deleted, and comes back unchanged if the block is lifted.
  • amend only connects to relays over encrypted connections (wss://), and official amend releases are signed with a private key that never leaves the developer’s computer.

Your messages, calls and media were end-to-end encrypted before this update and still are. Read our privacy policy.

Good to know

  • If you already used amend, your notification sounds don’t change by themselves: you keep your phone’s sounds until you pick an amend sound in Settings → Sounds. New installs start with amend’s sounds.
  • SOS alerts always use your phone’s loud alarm, whatever sounds you choose.
  • Notifications you received before updating open amend, but not the chat they were about.
